This is the first African BioImaging Consortium newsletter for the year 2024 and we are excited to share news of their recent activities, training and funding opportunities with you.
ABIC Activity
ABIC Signs MOU With Global BioImaging (GBI): ABIC signed an MOU with GBI last October last year to kick off GBI's Exchange of Experience VIII to become its most recent official partner. They represent 22 African countries and doubled the number of countries represented at GBI. This is a proud moment both for them and the bioimaging community worldwide.
Membership Signup: One of the new changes to how ABIC is run this year is formalizing their membership structure. They now have an official membership signup form and signing up is free and takes a few minutes.
Travel Grant
Travel Grant for GBI Exchange of Experience (EoE) IX: Global BioImaging will be hosting the ninth edition of its EoE conference at Okazaki, Japan between the 29th to the 31st of October, 2024. The theme of the conference will be "Image Data Horizons - Global Strategies for Accessible Knowledge". As part of its efforts to promote equitable access to this exciting opportunity, GBI is inviting applications for its Travel Grant Awards. To find out more about the scope of the award, the eligibility criteria, and the award value please check the full announcement linked below. The deadline for applications is the 29th of February 2024.
Research Grant
Research Grant to Access Spatial Omics Technology: If you are a basic science researcher based in Africa and possess clinically relevant human tissue samples for your research, you may be eligible for a research grant offering up to $40,000 in direct funding. We encourage you to submit your application for a one-year grant aiming to provide access to the GeoMx DSP technology. This advanced spatial omics technology seamlessly integrates tissue imaging and molecular profiling techniques. The technology has significant applications, such as enabling researchers to profile tissue microenvironments in disease states. It facilitates the identification of biomarkers with potential predictive value for therapeutic responses and reveals drug mechanisms of action. Additionally, it can enhance the understanding of disease mechanisms and progression. Projects eligible for funding should address critical challenges in infectious diseases such as HIV, TB, HPV, malaria, and others.

Research Grant
Global BioImage Analysts’ Society (GloBIAS) Survey: GloBIAS a non-profit association currently in preparation, and to officially launch as a registered society in the next 2 years, aims to be a worldwide society for everyone interested in bioimage analysis. GloBIAS seeks to keep the successful work done by NEUBIAS (Network of European Bioimage Analysts) alive and continue in the spirit of NEUBIAS connecting Bioimage Analysts, Life and Imaging Scientists and Bioimage Analysis Software Developers. GloBIAS works toward expanding its activities worldwide to welcome a larger number of scientists involved in bioimage analysis. The society will enable learning and knowledge exchange between the members, e.g. by establishing a repository of training materials and standards for bioimage analysis. It will regularly offer workshops and other events in person. Regular online events will allow exchange on different levels and will be shaped by the needs and wishes of the members. The society will have different workgroups which will be defined and run by its members.
The intended outcome of the survey is to have a better idea of what people working in BioImage analysis would be interested in regarding the type of events, training and how many would actively be interested in becoming involved in the society. ABIC also will collect some data regarding people’s positions and workplaces. If possible, we would like to repeat the survey and see how this data changes over time.
